Response:

We thank Dr Eduardo Rodrigues-Pinto et al1 for their interest in our article.2 The fact that they have found similar results in their experience is reassuring.3 We also agree with their hypothesis that longer esophageal stent dwell times may be related to a higher risk of stent-related adverse events (AEs). In fact, we underlined this hypothesis in the Discussion section of our article: "We believe that patients who survived longer had more time to experience AEs."2 Our finding that patients with a better performance status (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group class 0) had a lower risk of stent-related AEs prompted us to hypothesize that a poorer performance status and associated conditions (ie, malnutrition) could reflect a more-aggressive neoplasia.
