Asthma affects over 300 million people worldwide,1 of whom approximately 10% have severe asthma.2 Up to 87% of patients with severe asthma have uncontrolled disease despite available inhaled therapies.3 These patients experience frequent exacerbations, which can result in hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visits, placing a burden on healthcare systems.3 In the USA, asthma exacerbations account for approximately 1.8 million ED visits and 189,000 hospitalizations annually,4 with an average...
The grand global challenges of the Anthropocene are interdependent with ample evidence that reduced early-life ‘experience’ of biodiversity primes for immune dysregulation and a higher propensity low-grade inflammation, increasing the risk of allergy many other later-onset NCDs —also now implicated in the susceptibility to acute inflammation in COVID-19 infection. The objective of this review is to explore links between biodiversity on all scales and allergic disease as a measure of immune dysregulation.
Comorbid perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR), or year-round aeroallergen sensitivity, significantly contributes to disease burden in asthma patients. Dupilumab blocks the shared receptor for interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13, key drivers of type 2 inflammation that play important roles in asthma and PAR. In LIBERTY ASTHMA QUEST (NCT02414854), dupilumab reduced severe asthma exacerbations and improved forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) in patients with uncontrolled, moderate-to-severe asthma, with...

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease of the sinonasal cavity lasting longer than twelve weeks and is frequently characterized by the presence of nasal polyps. While, the etiology of CRS remains elusive, perturbations of the nasal microbiome and increased markers of the inflammatory state within the mucosal membranes have been demonstrated in affected individuals. Balanced inter-microbial exchange maintains the microbiota community and leads to anti-inflammatory host interactions.

The nonrecognition of asthma-associated comorbidities is often responsible for the therapeutic failure and the worsening of symptoms, and it is associated with frequent exacerbations, higher disease severity, and increased health costs. Bronchiectasis, one of the most frequent asthma-associated comorbidities, can increase airways inflammation and exacerbation rates and cause respiratory functional impairment. The aim of this article is to review the interactions between bronchiectasis and asthma,...
