Breast cancer stem cells: are we ready to go from bench to bedside?
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
Since the discovery of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) more than 10 years ago, a body of exciting research has developed. The intrinsic properties of BCSCs, including self-renewal and the ability to give rise to heterogeneous progeny, make BCSCs a likely source of tumour initiation, heterogeneity, progression and metastasis. BCSCs are also inherently resistant to conventional therapies and are therefore thought to contribute to disease recurrence. In this review, we will focus on both the challenges and recent advances in the characterization of BCSCs with respect to phenotype, ... περισσότερα »

Ductal carcinoma in situ – update on risk assessment and management
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
Ductal carcinoma *in situ* (DCIS) accounts for ~20–25% of breast cancers. While DCIS is not life-threatening, it may progress to invasive carcinoma over time, and treatment intended to prevent invasive progression may itself cause significant morbidity. Accurate risk assessment is therefore necessary to avoid over- or undertreatment of an individual patient. In this review we will outline the evidence for current management of DCIS, discuss approaches to DCIS risk assessment and challenges facing identification of novel DCIS biomarkers. from Anatomy Pathology via xlomafota13 on ... περισσότερα »
Recommendations for excision following core needle biopsy of the breast: a contemporary evaluation of the literature
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
Pathologists frequently encounter non-malignant histological findings in percutaneous core needle biopsies (CNBs). Standards for the management of patients with lesions such as atypical ductal hyperplasia, atypical lobular hyperplasia, and lobular carcinoma *in situ*, as well as other benign lesions, are not well defined, and recommendations for surgical biopsy or continued clinical and radiological follow-up are inconsistent. The frequency with which these lesions are 'upgraded' to carcinoma in excision specimens is widely variable in the literature. Many CNB studies lack carefu... περισσότερα »

Asymptomatic Interhypothalamic Adhesions in Children [PEDIATRICS]
SUMMARY: With the use of high-resolution MR imaging techniques, we have increasingly observed anomalies of the hypothalamus characterized by a band of tissue spanning the third ventricle between the hypothalami, often without associated clinical sequelae. Historically, hypothalamic anomalies are highly associated with symptoms referable to a hypothalamic hamartoma, midline congenital disorder, hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, or seizures, with very few asymptomatic patients reported. Light-Cured Self-Etch Adhesives Undergo Hydroxyapatite-Triggered Self-Cure
Light cure is a popular mode of curing for dental adhesives. However, it suffers from inadequate light delivery when the restoration site is less accessible, in which case a self-cure mechanism is desirable to salvage any compromised polymerization. We previously reported a novel self-cure system mediated by ethyl 4-(dimethylamino)-benzoate (4E) and hydroxyapatite (HAp). The present work aims to investigate if such self-cure phenomenon takes place in adhesives that underwent prior inadequate light cure and to elucidate if HAp released from the dental etching process is sufficient t...περισσότερα »

The role of dietary potassium in hypertension and diabetes
Abstract Potassium is an essential mineral which plays major roles for the resting membrane potential and the intracellular osmolarity. In addition, for several years, it has been known that potassium also affects endothelial and vascular smooth muscle functions and it has been repeatedly shown that an increase in potassium intake shifts blood pressure to a more preferable level. Meanwhile, the blood pressure lowering effects of potassium were presented in several intervention trials and summarized in a handful of meta-analyses. Spontaneous complete resolution of a radiolucent shadow associated with an impacted mandibular third molar
Impacted third molars are commonly associated with areas of radiolucency, and treatment can damage the adjacent structures, specifically the inferior alveolar nerve. We report a rare and interesting case of a large radiolucent area associated with an impacted mandibular wisdom tooth that resolved over 7 years with no intervention. Improved wound management at lower cost: a sensible goal for Australia
Abstract Chronic wounds cost the Australian health system at least US$2·85 billion per year. Wound care services in Australia involve a complex mix of treatment options, health care sectors and funding mechanisms. It is clear that implementation of evidence-based wound care coincides with large health improvements and cost savings, yet the majority of Australians with chronic wounds do not receive evidence-based treatment. High initial treatment costs, inadequate reimbursement, poor financial incentives to invest in optimal care and limitations in clinical skills are major barrier...περισσότερα »
The effect of dispersed Petrobaltic oil droplet size on photosynthetically active radiation in marine environment

Sensitivity of the deep-sea amphipod Eurythenes gryllus to chemically dispersed oil
Abstract In the context of an oil spill accident and the following oil spill response, much attention is given to the use of dispersants. Dispersants are used to disperse an oil slick from the sea surface into the water column generating a cloud of dispersed oil droplets. The main consequence is an increasing of the sea water–oil interface which induces an increase of the oil biodegradation. Hence, the use of dispersants can be effective in preventing oiling of sensitive coastal environments. Also, in case of an oil blowout from the seabed, subsea injection of dispersants may offer... περισσότερα »
