EUS–guided tissue acquisition in GI stromal tumors

Incidentally noted subepithelial lesions of the GI tract are frequently encountered during endoscopy, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 300 patients.1 Although many of these lesions are benign, up to 25% are malignant or premalignant, with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) accounting for almost 75% of these lesions.2 EUS evaluation of subepithelial lesions is pivotal to determine mural origin and to identify morphologic characteristics that may be concerning for malignancy, such as lesions greater than 2 cm, hyperechoic foci, cystic changes, or irregular borders.
