ObjectivesTo determine the usefulness of evaluating swallowing function before and after surgery in tongue cancer patients by T2-weighted sequences of high-speed continuous magnetic resonance (HSCMR) images.Study DesignThe imaging findings and related parameters on HSCMR along with routine MRI examinations before and after surgery were examined in 19 tongue cancer subjects. In addition, changes in various parameters over one year after surgery were evaluated in 10 subjects.ResultsIn most subjects examined, the direction of flow to the esophagus could be seen on HSCMR before and after surgery. There were significant correlations between four parameters and the responses to a dysphagia questionnaire.ConclusionsThe results of the present study suggest that the dynamics of swallowing can be directly visualized on HSCMR using 4 parameters that permit the evaluation of changes before and after surgery, and they can provide an objective evaluation of patients' swallowing complaints.
