Abstract
Seizures represent approximately 1% of all ED visits in the United States. 1 Unprovoked first seizures in children commonly present to the Emergency Department (ED), and even after the neurological exam normalizes, the prospect of recurrence can be a source of great anxiety for caregivers. 2 Compared to febrile seizures, unprovoked seizures carry a higher rate of recurrence and epilepsy. Previous studies focused on long term recurrence and the cumulative risk of a second seizure was 29%, 37%, 43%, and 46% at 1, 2, 5, and 10 years, respectively. 3 There has been limited information on the short-term risk of recurrence to guide emergency physicians.
