Managing the patient with colorectal adenomas found at an early age

Colorectal cancer (CRC) continues to be the third most common cause of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. The incidence of CRC and mortality in individuals over age 50 have both decreased in the setting of colonoscopy screening programs. Alarmingly, a recent analysis from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program reported that the incidence of CRC is increasing among adults younger than 50 years of age.1 Colon cancer incidence rates increased by 1.0% to 2.4% annually since the mid-1980s in adults ages 20 to 39 years and by .5% to 1.3% since the mid-1990s in adults ages 40 to 54 years.
